Alert: DattoRMM Patch Scanning Issue – Critical Intelligence Report

SHARE THIS POST:

Greetings, MSP professionals! It appears Microsoft has inadvertently thrown a wrench into your patch management operations. But don’t fret – Q Labs has intercepted critical information from our colleagues at DattoRMM, and we’re here to brief you on the latest fix.

The Problem: Microsoft’s June 2024 Update

Microsoft’s recent Servicing Stack Update (SSU) has rendered patch scans on Windows 10 and 11 devices rather useless. The result? Your trusted DattoRMM returns a puzzling “No Data” status, leaving your Patch Management in quite the predicament.

The Technical Details: Windows Update Agent (WUA)

Our investigation reveals that WUA versions 1300 and higher are returning empty objects, leaving DattoRMM unable to parse the data. This results in the frustrating “No Data” status you’ve been seeing.

DattoRMM’s Solution: WUA JSON Adjustment Tool [WIN]

Thankfully, our esteemed colleagues at DattoRMM have developed a clever fix. The “WUA JSON Adjustment Tool [WIN]” component, available from the DattoRMM ComStore, is here to save the day. Here’s how it works:

  1. It modifies the UUSSettings.json file, adding problematic WUA versions to the blocklist.
  2. If the UserReboot checkbox is selected, It then initiates a double reboot sequence to ensure the changes take effect.

Note: This tool can cause affected systems to reboot twice in quick succession. Please prepare your clients accordingly. If you do not check the UserReboot checkbox, it will not reboot, but the system will not get patch status until 1 or 2 reboots.

The Long-Term Solution: Microsoft’s August 2024 Update

Microsoft has issued a fix as part of KB5041585. However, for devices already affected, you’ll need to deploy DattoRMM’s WUA JSON Adjustment Tool to restore functionality.

Your Action Plan

  1. Deploy the WUA JSON Adjustment Tool to affected devices as per DattoRMM’s instructions.
  2. Monitor your systems for the return of proper patch scanning functionality.
  3. Stay alert – you may need to rerun the component if future Windows Updates cause similar issues.

Remember, in our line of work, a well-patched system is your best defense against cyber threats. Don’t let Microsoft’s update leave you in a lurch. Deploy DattoRMM’s solution and keep your clients’ systems secure and up-to-date.
